Encanto

Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz) lives with her family in Colombia but is frustrated by the fact she lacks the gifts that they have. This is because Mirabel is the only member of the family not to have a magical trait and that includes the family home which can move its own floors and walls to assist the residents.

As Mirabel tries her hardest to gain the approval of her grandmother Abuela (Maria Cecilia Botero) we learn of a missing brother who no one speaks of and the pressures that the other magical members of the family feel despite their gift. And then disaster strikes, the magic begins to fade resulting in their home beginning to fall apart. Can Mirabel learn the root of the issue and save the family home and keep them together?

Encanto is quintessential Disney family viewing and I do not have a bad word for it. It does everything an animated musical should. The animation is lush and a feast for the eyes. The songs, by Lin-Manuel Miranda are catchy and lots of fun. And the moral of the story, that we are all important and have something to offer is perfect for families to discuss and reinforce.

Hopefully this will enter the cycle of Frozen and Moana in our Disney musicals.
