U.S. Forest Ranger Finn Wheeler (Sam Richardson) is taking a post in a backwater town following a break up and instantly hits it off with relative newcomer to the town Cecily Moore (Milana Vayntrub). As the local postal worker she gives him the tour and the lowdown on all the reasons the local community secretly hate each other before a big storm knocks out the power and forces everyone to hole up in the hotel at the top of the mountain. Of course when people start getting attacked there is no shortage of accusations as to who might be the werewolf in the group.
Werewolves Within is based on the 2016 virtual reality video game of the same name. It is a social deduction game where one or more players are secretly given the role of werewolf whilst everyone else has to discover the traitor in their midst.
The set up for the film is to quickly cover the issues that divide the group and then put them together in a dark room and see who dies next. I would compare it to The Thing except that the tone here is more of an attempt at horror comedy. A tone initially set by starting the film with a heart warming quote from Mr. Rogers set to ominous music proving anything can be scary with the right setting.
The issue is that with the exception of our two leads nothing much else is going for the film. The rest of the cast are throwaway and only mildly diverting and the film never really manages to pull off horror, thriller or comedy landing in a middle ground that will probably not satisfy anyone watching. Richardson and Vayntrub are fun though and carry you through the ninety-seven minute run time with their screen presence.
I suspect you will not remember anything about it within a week of watching though. Perhaps you should just go and play ‘Among Us’ online to get your fill of social deduction games?
