The 355

CIA agent Mason Browne (Jessica Chastain) is tasked with recovering a devastating cyber weapon. But when her operation goes wrong she gathers a team of women each from a different agency to help capture and destroy the weapon.

Mason’s CIA agent will enlist Marie Schmidt (Diane Kruger) from Germany’s BND, Khadijah Adiyeme (Lupita Nyong’o) from Britain’s MI6 and Graciela Rivera (Penelope Cruz) from Colombia’s DNI to go jet setting around the globe in pursuit of the weapon. Along the way there will be many twist and turns and a fair bit of action.

Unfortunately the action manages to be fairly tame with perhaps the best moments being Chastain’s fight scenes whilst the plot manages to be fairly predictable and also filled with just one or two many plot extending twists. The ending is also pretty corny, especially the blink and you will miss it moment that explains the title of the film.

Ultimately what the film needs is an identity, rather than just feeling like it has borrowed different ideas from other films and connected them together. Part of that identity is also very much that it is financed by China because a late development will see them sweep in as the heroes with Bingbing Fan getting to utter a line about how we are all different but fighting for the same cause. Try not to roll your eyes to much at that scene, you may do yourself an injury.

The 355 wants to be a springboard for a new female led action franchise. But the issue is that it is merely a perfectly serviceable flick that you would not be fussed about watching twice. Fine in the moment but if you ask yourself afterwards which action scene was the most memorable you would struggle to think of a single one. It is a shame really because with this cast it had every right to be better.
