Ali (Adeel Akhtar) and Ava (Claire Rushbrook) meet when he is collecting his friend’s daughter from the school she works at and form a connection that they both nervously follow.
Ali is separated from his wife whilst still living in the same house as her and pretending to his family that nothing is wrong. Ava is bruised from losing her abusive husband whilst trying to keep his memory preserved for her territorial son. The pair’s connection is forged by their love of music. Ali loves dance and Ava loves folk and as their relationship blossoms they begin to enjoy the other’s taste.
Set in working class Bradford this is an ode to love blossoming between two middle aged and lonely people. Akhtar and Rushbrook deliver tender and emotional performances that sell their connection and the use of music is impressive.
The plot line is essentially a typical romantic comedy but its focus on realism is admirable.
