Jujutsu Kaisen 0

As a young boy Yuta Okkotsu witnessed the death of his girlfriend in a road traffic accident. At that moment her cursed spirit latched onto him and has protected him from harm ever since. In an attempt to train Okkotsu  to manage this violent cursed spirit powerful sorcerer Satoru Gojo brings him to Jujutsu High to train him as a sorcerer.

Whilst at Jujutsu, Okkotsu meets and becomes friends with three other young sorcerers (including a panda). But their training is disturbed when former student and best friend of Gojo plans an attack in order to try and take control of Okkotsu’s curse.

Going into this film I had zero knowledge of the anime this film is based on or its history so I am unable to tell you whether your enjoyment might be enriched with prior knowledge. What I can say is that on the whole it is a coherent story without any other knowledge. Or as coherent as a story about sorcerers who control curses that attack each other can be. Although to be fair it is really just a darker and more violent version of Harry Potter.

In Japan this film has become the 23rd highest grossing film of all time at their box office and the anime it is based on is just as popular.

Narratively though I was not overly engrossed. Ultimately your enjoyment here will just be about whether you get really excited by dark and gruesome monsters and sorcerers fighting in pretty dramatic Japanese animation style. Which involves them explaining what attacks they are going to do as they do them. Frankly I would have loved it as a teenager and I spent quite a large amount of the final battle scenes imagining how good it all would have been as a video game RPG.

I am sure that Japanese anime fans will be very happy.
