Slaxx

Trendy clothing store CCC are about to launch their revolutionary brand of jeans called Super Shapers. The only issue is that the jeans are possessed and go on a murderous rampage of the store readying for the launch.

Opening in an experimental cotton field in India where workers are picking the materials for the jeans we then cut to brand new employee Libby (Romane Denis) on her first day in store at Canadian Cotton Clothiers. Idealistic and naive she is fully bought into CCC’s promise of ethically produced clothes that are making the world a better place. She then of course meets the incredibly arrogant and hideous members of the team who point out that she needs to buy an entirely new outfit to work there because despite the fact she is bedecked in CCC products, they are a few months old. Unperturbed she buys a new set of clothes only to be informed she will not be getting employee discount because she has not started her first shift.

The CCC store where we spend most of our time is beautifully realised as a take down of modern shopping culture. Everything is organised by colour in a store that is pure white. Think an Apple Store where each quadrant of the store houses a specific colour of clothing item. Then of course there are the many slogans drilled into its employees. “Making a better tomorrow today” and Be Lieve, Be Come, Be you get the idea.

All of the managers and supervisors hate each other and want only to get above the other in terms of rank and of course there is a vapid influencer who will be coming to the store at midnight to help advertise the launch.

On a surface level there are many take downs of fast fashion, its impact on foreign workers and the treatment of staff who work hourly rates in stores. There is also some effort to ask us to look deeper at all those brands that constantly tell us how ethically sound they are.

But do not worry yourself that this is too heavy a film. Because the main focus is a pair of jeans that murders people in all sorts of hilariously insane ways and then drinks their blood. Add this to the acerbic wit and it is all thoroughly entertaining stuff.

Slaxx is an old fashioned high concept B movie horror film wrapped up in modern moral messaging. With a run time of 77 minutes it is straight to the point and filled with over the top acting, cheap slasher effects, buckets of blood, a ridiculous premise and some brief social commentary. All in all it is a lot of fun.

Oh and keep watching during the credits for some fun making of moments and out takes.
