The Contractor

James Harper (Chris Pine) is a U.S. Army Ranger who has given his life to service. With his knee destroyed in combat he turns to drugs to keep him active but it results in him being discharged from the Army with no benefits. Turning to his friend Mike (Ben Foster), another ex-Ranger, he gets a job as a private military contractor. His first job is not what it seems though.

Chris Pine has worked with Ben Foster before on the The Finest Hours and Hell Or High Water. The former is satisfying if not extraordinary whilst the latter is both. This unfortunately is perfunctory at best.

It’s message is about how the military treats its most valuable resource, the humans within it, terribly. But the main driving force behind the plot is a pedestrian action thriller narrative. The result is a drama that barely touches the surface of the matters it wants to explore and an action thriller that is slow and unexciting. In fact the action is arguably where it is at its worst with infrequent and unimpressive forays into firefights and combat that are poorly edited to the point they fail to hide the stunt doubles in almost any scene.

Chris Pine and Ben Foster are completely dependable and clearly work well together whilst cameos from Eddie Marsan and Kiefer Sutherland are welcome additions to try and keep things interesting.

You would be much better off seeking one of Pine and Foster’s other collaborations.
