The Bob’s Burgers Movie

The Belcher family are behind on loan payments and need to make money fast to save the restaurant. There is only one problem though, a sinkhole has appeared in front of the restaurant meaning no one can get in.

When a skeleton is found in the sinkhole matters seem like they can not get worse but then the children come up with a plan where they can save the restaurant if only they can work out how the skeleton got there.

Confession time, I have not seen a single episode of Bob’s Burgers. According to IMDB at the time of writing the show has been running for 11 years, 12 seasons and 237 episodes, so that could be seen as some to be quite a feat missing all of them! So I can not tell you if this is similar to the show, if there are any new characters or in jokes. What appalling film criticism.

What I can say though is that I was entertained and I did enjoy myself in a slightly peculiar way. The humour is all a little gentle and odd. The characters concerns and worries are all fundamentally normal whilst they are thrust into a very unusual predicament. Whilst mum and dad worry about paying their bills the children worry about what the other kids think of them. Every time I found myself starting to get bored something unusual would pop along such as a song of which the film contains three (it probably could have done with more) or something else slightly odd.

The voice cast is solid with two of the cast very recognisable to me. Bob is voiced by Archer’s H. Jon Benjamin with his inimitable style whilst one of the children is voiced by Kristen Schaal.

I think on the strength of this I might be convinced to give the show a try, although it is possible that 238 episodes is too much of an investment for a film that was peculiarly enjoyable. But I suspect fans of the show might well be very happy.
