Spiderhead penitentiary run by Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth) conducts drug tests on prisoners in exchange for shorter sentences and the most comfortable open prison imaginable. Jeff (Miles Teller) haunted by the actions that resulted in him being incarcerated starts to question the legitimacy of the tests being conducted on him.
Set on the sort of facility that would make a Bond villain jealous Spiderhead is a slick affair. The facility is nestled in a remote tropical island and features plush facilities for its prisoners who are able to walk anywhere they please except through the front door. This includes Abnesti’s quarters as he believes trust is the most important aspect of their relationship.
Whilst on the facility the prisoners must agree to each test with the current test being for N-40. A drug that promotes feelings of intense love. When Jeff starts to question Steve relationships start to stretch though.
Joseph Kosinski, hot off the success of Top Gun: Maverick has chosen to release a much more low key think piece as his follow up. Whilst it features a fascinating idea I have to say that the entire exercise left me feeling completely flat.
Honestly nothing about the film stood out for me with perhaps the exception of the beautiful scenery on offer outside the facility. The moral conundrums never quite bristled enough whilst the performances were all just fine with nothing to stand out. Nothing is particularly negative either. It just never made me feel particularly anything. Odd given the function of N-40.
