DC League of Super-Pets

Krypto the Super-Dog (Dwayne Johnson) begins to worry about his friendship with Superman (John Krasinski) when he plans to propose to Lois Lane (Olivia Wilde). Luckily an evil Guinea Pig named Lulu (Kate McKinnon) set on world domination hatches a plan that will force Krypto to make new friends in the form of a newly empowered group of pets. Namely Ace the dog (Kevin Hart), PB the pig (Vanessa Bayer), Merton the turtle (Natasha Lyonne) and Chip the squirrel (Diego Luna).

DC League of Super-Pets is the sort of film that does exactly what is required of it but never more or less. It is the kind of film that I thoroughly enjoyed whilst watching but I struggle to make a review sound particularly effusive.

The animation and art style is fine but not as beautiful as a Ghibli or Pixar film. The plotting and humour is very much aimed at the younger audience but has a decent amount of DC superhero Easter eggs and a few chuckles for the adults in the audience as well. The plot is fine and it was fun to see another film with a Guinea Pig as the villain (see also The Bad Guys) and lots of Justice League cameos. But none of it will blow your mind and have you coming back for more. On the other hand if you have young kids and want to watch a film together you could do a lot worse as well.

The absolute stand out for me and probably the source of most of my joy was Kate McKinnon’s Lulu. McKinnon’s voice performance lifts the whole film and every time her character was soliloquising I was a happy man.
