Sophie (Amandla Stenberg) brings her new girlfriend Bee (Maria Bakalova) to her best friends house for a hurricane party. When the group decide to play a party game called Bodies Bodies Bodies (a variation on werewolf) they find that the murders are not just part of the game.
There is a lot going on in Bodies Bodies Bodies. The group of seven characters are super rich, actively taking copious amounts of drugs, obsessed with their devices, record Tik Tok videos and are hyper aware of social media buzz words such as gaslighting, toxic and triggering. As a satire there is a lot to unpack. But honestly the fact that it is incredibly smart and funny whilst being a tense whodunnit thriller is enough for me. Everything else over and above that is just extra.
What makes it perfect as a whodunnit mystery is that everyone present either has a reason to dislike each other or is new to the group. Stenberg’s character Sophie is fresh out of rehab and the group have not seen her for quite a while and that has created some acrimony. Her partner Bee along with Greg (Lee Pace) are new to the group and are therefore unknowns. Whilst David (Pete Davidson), Alice (Rachel Sennott), Emma (Chase Sui Wonders) and Jordan (Myha’la Herrold) all have some beef with each other despite being best of friends for years. The result is that you will constantly be guessing who the murderer is and what motive is the strongest. The fact that they all make dumb choices because of what seems to be rampant narcissism only makes it funnier.
The result is fantastic and the mic drop ending is utterly genius in how perfect it fits everything that has done before.
Performances are all round strong and I would be hard pitched to single anyone out. Whilst the direction and visuals are striking and taught.
A fantastic thriller that runs in at just 94 minutes.
