A divorced couple (George Clooney and Julia Roberts) who have not seen eye to eye for just over a decade band together to try to prevent their daughter Lily (Kaitlyn Dever) marrying the seaweed farmer (Maxime Bouttier) she has met on holiday in Bali.
Ticket To Paradise is the sort of romantic comedy we used to see regularly in the 1990’s right up to the hilarious outtakes that are included in the end credits. Your mileage for how enjoyable you will find it will probably be down to how susceptible you are to the star power and sheer loveliness of Clooney and Roberts who clearly get on like a house on fire. Personally I had a great time due to that alone but it is worth warning you that there is nothing ground breaking on show here.
Lily has just graduated and has a job as a lawyer waiting for her after her holiday. That is until she meets Gede (Bouttier) who sweeps her off her feet. Worried that their daughter is going to make the same mistake they did our star couple put their differences aside to save their daughter’s future. The thing is they might just find that they still have some feelings for each other along the way to discovering that their daughter should be able to make her own decisions. Cue some mild attempts to scupper the wedding plans and some heart to hearts between all involved. The best scenes by far tap into Clooney and Roberts chemistry and nothing can top their game of beer pong whilst listening to some old school tunes played by the DJ.
The film does an exceptional job for the Balinese tourist board as well with the locations looking nothing less than idyllic at all times.
Alongside Marry Me 2023 could perhaps be the resurgence of the romantic comedy.
