Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) returns as a detective for hire and her first case involves the disappearance of Sarah Chapman (Hannah Dodd), a woman who works in a match factory. The conspiracy she uncovers will cross paths with the case that her brother Sherlock (Henry Cavill) is working on and require some assistance from her suitor Lord Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge).
I thoroughly enjoyed the original Enola Holmes when it arrived in 2020 and was really looking forward to this sequel from the same creative team of director Harry Bradbeer and writer Jack Thorne. This time though, thanks purely to the fact that this is the second time round the film is lots of fun but also just more of the same. Of course that is not too much of a negative it just means it did not make as much of an impact on me as the original did.
The same hallmarks of the first film are there. Millie Bobby Brown is fantastic as Enola who is both a brilliant sleuth and a teenager at heart. Henry Cavill and Helena Bonham Carter are lots of fun as brother Sherlock and mother Eudoria. Sadly there is no Sam Claflin as Mycroft this time but they do introduce some other classic Holmes characters to step into the fold. The plot is snappy, the fourth wall breaking is plentiful and all in all it’s a lot of fun.
This franchise could definitely have some legs. Hopefully they can think of some new spins on the formula to keep it fresh but for now it is perfect family entertainment available to stream at home.
