Disenchanted

After their happily ever after Giselle (Amy Adams), Robert (Patrick Dempsey) and Morgan (Gabriella Baldacchino) move to the suburb of Monroeville in order to have more room for their new addition to the family. Unfortunately everything does not quite go to plan and in her desperation Giselle wishes for a fairytale life and gets more than she bargained for.

With the entire town turned into a fairytale kingdom Giselle realises that as a stepmother her role in the story might change some what significantly.

Enchanted was an absolute delight and the prospect of a belated sequel brings with it the baggage of possibility. The original used Giselle’s naivety and wondrous delight at the mundane to perfection, featured an array of catchy songs and a splendid villain in Susan Sarandon. Which is a lot to live up to. Unfortunately Disenchanted only manages to be average on every level. It’s perfectly decent but as a sequel to a very good film that makes it a disappointment.

Amy Adams and Maya Rudolph (as an evil Queen of the new town they move to) are completely game for the challenge and occasionally set off little sparks of excitement. Their duet together is probably the most fun part of the entire film. Amy Adams also has a good schtick where she does a “Gollum” impression where her wicked step mother persona challenges her normal good personality.

Elsewhere though the film is just average. The songs seem like afterthoughts, the appearances of characters from the first film feel like a requirement rather than adding anything to proceedings. It’s all just so disappointing.

I am sure with a lower level of expectation there is fun to be had but why would you watch this when the original is available?
