A biopic of Weird Al Yankovic (Daniel Radcliffe) that is also a parody of biopics.
Weird seemed like a fantastic idea to me and the trailer made me genuinely excited to watch the film but the end product is about as hit and miss as the titular singer’s output. There are moments that seem genuinely inspired and others that are just banal.
The film charts Yankovic’s life from a young child to famous musician. It includes his home life with a domineering one handed father (Toby Huss) and sensitive caring mother (Julianne Nicholson), rise to fame via recording in a public bathroom, love affair with Madonna (Evan Rachel Wood) and some other batshit crazy things that definitely never happened but do send up the medium well.
The amount of cameos and famous faces on display throughout is eye watering. If I even dared to name some I might be here all day. Possibly the best one though is the real Yankovic appearing as record label owner Tony Scotti. Whilst Daniel Radcliffe, famous now for some really out there film choices is actually remarkably good as Yankovic.
Overall I wish the hit rate on jokes was better or the story more engaging. But its silliness and plain weirdness does give it some legs as far as entertainment factor goes.
