When Cady (Violet McGraw) is orphaned in a car accident she goes to live with her aunt Gemma (Allison Williams). Whilst Gemma may be overawed with the idea of being a parent she has a solution via her career as a robotics engineer. She builds an A.I. friend for her niece named M3gan (Amie Donald & Jenna Davis). The only issue is that M3gan may have decided that she does not want to listen to her creator.
Opening with a low quality toy advert exactly like those you would see on Saturday morning kids television we get to see the Furby like perpetual pets that Gemma’s toy company makes. We then cut to Cady playing with the present her aunt gave her in the back of her parents car as they head to their ill fated ski holiday. When Gemma has to take Cady in she is so preoccupied with her job she barely gives her any consideration at all. That is until Cady gives her the inspiration to complete M3gan. One montage later and Cady has a forever friend.
There is a serious message in here. Parents using technology to babysit their children resulting in them not getting the human connection they need. A Frankenstein obsession with bringing a creation to life that turns on you because you did not equip it for the world you live in. But where the film works best is when it goes really nuts and lets M3gan be supremely weird and scary followed by an almost immediate switch to caring. Singing Titanium and dancing a learnt routine juxtaposed with ripping an ear off is just great fun.
M3gan is from the creative minds (writers Akela Cooper and James Wan) of the genius but crazy horror movie Malignant and there are some facets where this really shows through. Just like with Malignant they have focused on some horror tropes and really tried to heighten the fun aspect in scaring people. The evil toy, the rogue A.I. and a Frankenstein’s monster all mashed into one but with a super modern twist. If I am honest though it never quite lives up to Malignant levels of fun because it does not quite let go in quite the same way.
M3gan is lots of fun. I just wanted slightly more crazy.
