65 million years ago an astronaut transporting passengers in cryogenic sleep crash lands on Earth. Mills (Adam Driver) must negotiate a hostile planet populated by dinosaurs as he tries to rescue one of the survivors of the crash, a young girl named Koa (Ariana Greenblatt).
65 feels a little old fashioned in its simplicity and is actually a lot of fun as a result. At 93 minutes long it sets out to create the sort of action adventure that families could watch together.
It opens with Mills on his home planet with his wife Alya (Nika King) and daughter Nevine (Chloe Coleman). Nevine is unwell and Mills has decided to take on a 2 year mission to pay for her care. This of course sets us up perfectly for Mills paternal care towards Koa, a young girl of a similar age to his daughter. From here it is then all about pitting them against the dinosaurs, bugs and landscape of prehistoric Earth.
The action, thrills and scares skew slightly older than say Jurassic Park but the result is a very real sense that nothing on this planet is friendly and Mills task will be a difficult one. Adam Driver is typically committed to his performance as well and the manner in which he makes us see deeper into Mills pain and drive makes the film far more nuanced.
An entertaining lightweight action movie.
