Billy Batson (Asher Angel), aka Shazam (Zachary Levi) returns for another adventure with his extended family of superheroes. This time he is pitted against a trio of sisters who also happen to be Gods seeking revenge for the death of their father.
The original Shazam was a lot of fun marred by a generic storyline and lack of inspiring action. It did however get by on the chemistry between its cast, its heartwarming story about finding a family and its humour. Unfortunately Fury Of The Gods just feels like a mess. Everything that was bad about the original is here whilst the positives have seriously diminishing returns. Ultimately I was left feeling bored and disinterested for long periods of the film.
The new villains played by Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu and Rachel Zegler are sisters seeking to retake powers stolen from them and renew their Godly realm. Or something like that anyway, it all frankly became a bit convoluted and uninteresting. Zegler is the most fun as the conflicted villain but Liu and Mirren seemed wooden to me. Liu especially struggles when sitting atop a CGI dragon and just looks like she is sitting on a rollercoaster ride reading the script.
Whilst the heroes all have their own little struggles with the main one being Batson’s worry that he will lose his new family. The humour is still present though and these two themes feel like they are aimed at a more family audience.
Oddly the film also seems to throw the kitchen sink at all sorts of other things. Greek mythology, pop culture gags, two bizarre credit scenes, a Justice League cameo, unicorns and an advert for skittles.
I suspect it will be perfect Sunday afternoon viewing for families (where I could sneak in a snooze on the sofa) but it is not something I would seek out for another watch.
