Nimona

When the queen of the realm is murdered at the knighthood ceremony for Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), it is Boldheart himself who is held accountable. Whilst running from the authorities and trying to find out who is the true killer he is befriended by a young woman named Nimona (Chloe Grace Moretz) who has a grudge against the kingdom and is looking to offer help to Boldheart.

The unlikely pair forge a friendship and with the help of Nimona’s shapeshifting powers find a way to set things straight and change the kingdom’s outlook on more than just the murder of the queen.

Nimona is based on a graphic novel by ND Stevenson which was released in 2015 and the underlying themes are very much about how hate is taught and that the systems in which that hate is created need to be challenged. Ballister’s character is homosexual whilst Nimona faces prejudice due to the fact she is a shapeshifter and labelled a monster. The entire kingdom’s philosophy is to face inward and protect themselves from the monsters of the outer world. Nimona and Ballister challenge this and ultimately get people to become more inclusive and open to change.

With that all being said this film is simply ok. It is actually the sort of film that I find nearly impossible to review. There is so little that is outstanding in either a good or a bad way it is really hard to muster much excitement or venom for it.

The story is incredibly predictable, the animation in the main is just fine but nothing like what other films are doing and the voice cast is perfectly acceptable. Where as on the other hand the film does have quite a lot of humour with the chaotic behaviour of Nimona, the futuristic theme overlaid onto medieval themes is fun and when the film is doing a flashback or similar the animation actually becomes interesting.

Honestly though watching it is not going to change your world and if you have children it is much better than a lot of other things you might find yourself watching.
