Rachel Stone (Gal Gadot) is a super spy working for a secret organisation that uses the most powerful AI known to man called “The Heart”. When unknown enemies try to capture this technology Rachel may be the only hope to stop them.
Heart of Stone is a film that violently screams “Generic Netflix Action Movie” from the moment it starts and all the way through its rather dull 122 minute running time. It is a promising premise made dull at every opportunity. I guessed the villain within seconds of the film starting and almost every significant plot point thereafter. Whilst only a few hours after watching I would have forgotten about every single action sequence in the film if it was not for my usual note taking that I do after watching a film.
The biggest frustration here is that the film has the potential to be much more fun than this. The secret organisation has a cool idea around its code names being playing cards where the teams within it are suits of cards and the operatives in the teams the specific cards within them. The reason goes unexplored and just gives the film its title. Rachel is a member of the Hearts and her surname is Stone. Whilst the budget seems significant none of the action scenes have any weight. They are all effects heavy and full of frequent cuts that result in no peril and no sense of excitement.
As for the performances nothing stands out at all. Gal Gadot seems game but does not really make an impression. Whilst familiar faces such as the likes of Jamie Dornan, Matthias Schweighofer and Glenn Close are not able to lift the material.
Honestly the whole thing was thoroughly depressingly dull in its absolute functionality and complete lack of spark.
