The Blackening

Seven friends hire a cabin in the woods for a Juneteenth celebration that doubles as a reunion. However there is a killer on the loose who forces them to take part in a game of his creation or die.

The Blackening is a horror movie whose black protagonists are subjected to playing a made up racist game about being black. Whilst its themes are a cross between social satire and comedy it leans more to the latter. It is also only a horror movie on a surface level and actually eschews any real scares in favour of humour making it generally more welcoming to a wider audience.

Unfortunately for me I found the whole thing a bit of a misfire that is just not really aimed at me. There is no horror or scares, the comedy was occasionally worthy of a chuckle but nothing more and most embarrassingly for someone who considers themself worldly wise I just did not get enough of the cultural touchstones to ‘get it’.

At best I found its script to be rather knowing in terms of horror movie tropes but it is hardly a recommendation to watch.
