No One Will Save You

A young woman is attacked by an alien intruder in the middle of the night. Can she survive the ordeal?

Brynn (Kaitlyn Dever) lives on her own in the rural home left to her by her mother who recently died. She occupies her time running an online business, practicing ballroom dancing by herself and writing letters to a childhood friend whom she no longer sees. She rarely steps into town as no one has forgiven her for a childhood transgression and she is effectively an outcast.

Brynn is thoroughly alone.

As her fight for survival plays out in an almost entirely dialogue free film we learn more about her pain and what has led her to be alone.

No One Will Save You is exceptionally good. It has repeatedly returned to my thoughts since I watched it and the more I think about the way it is constructed and its themes the more I admire it. Every time you think you know what sort of movie it will be it pivots. It is an intruder film where our heroine must fight for survival. It is an alien invasion film where our heroine searches for their weakness. It is an introspective look into a persons pain. And it will remind you of Invasion of the Bodysnatchers, Predator, Independence Day, Signs and Annihilation. It is tense and exciting in the threat Brynn faces. It is clever and interesting in its creature design. Whilst most importantly it packs an emotional heft with its drip feed of Brynn’s life before an alien invasion.

Whilst the conceit of no dialogue makes its storytelling more interesting by making us infer the reasoning and motivations behind what is happening. And an absolute belter of an ending will have you talking after the film for some time.

Kaitlyn Dever is wonderful in the lead role conveying all her emotions without words. Whilst writer/director Brian Duffield whose debut film Spontaneous was interesting has really nailed his sophomore effort.

A must watch and as this is streaming only make sure you do so in a dark room.
