The Three Musketeers: Milady (2023)

As D’Artagnan (Francois Civil) tries to rescue his new love Constance (Lyna Khoudri) he finds himself in the midst of a prison break where he forms an uneasy alliance with the mysterious Milady (Eva Green). Meanwhile France seems to be slipping inexorably towards Civil War due to the machinations of an unseen conspirator.

Opening directly following the events of The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan (2023) this sequel will not let down fans of that first brilliant instalment. In fact having laid the groundwork already it allows this continuation of the story to feature even more dashing bravery and sword fighting sequences.

Opening with the aforementioned prison break the film does not let up until it culminates in a brilliant duel inside a burning building and some intrigue that could point to further forays into this world. All of this of course with the same wonderful sets, costumes and realistic fight sequences as the first film which it was shot back to back with.

Eva Green, who I described as “the perfect manifestation of Milady” in my review of the original film gets even more to do here and alongside Civil’s D’Artagnan make for a compelling lead duo. The only issue that I could refer to as a result is that the other Musketeers feel a little more sidelined here with Aramis (Romain Duris) and Porthos’ (Pio Marmai) relegated to a more comical side storyline. Whilst Athos (Vincent Cassel) does get to wrestle with his emotions a little more.

All in all though this will make a wonderful double bill with its predecessor and completes a fantastic achievement in bringing the Alexander Dumas’ Musketeers to the screen.
