Leo (Adam Sandler) the lizard and Squirtle (Bill Burr) the turtle have been school pets in the same 5th grade class for decades. When 74-year-old Leo hears that lizards only live for 75 years he decides he has to escape to live out his dream of visiting the Everglades.
Luckily for him a new substitute teacher decides a good way to teach responsibility is to have the students take turns to take a pet home for the weekend. The issue for Leo though is he finds himself making friends with the students and giving them advice rather than escaping.
Leo is a strangely enjoyable movie. The animation is merely functional by today’s standards. The songs feel underbaked but in a humorous way. But what it does well is its comedy and its clear aim of just giving young children good advice. Leo is either simply just there for them or gives them simple advice they can take on board.
Adam Sandler and Bill Burr are absolutely hilarious as the class pets. The humour is not necessarily toned down for the kids which gives the adults something to enjoy too. Whilst Leo’s song about how to manage crying is the absolute highlight of the film.
At 102 minutes it feels slightly long. But for children this will be a winner on streaming.
