Beekeeper Adam Clay (Jason Statham) finds himself a little perturbed when the nice lady who rents her barn to him takes her own life following an internet scam that empties all her bank accounts. Luckily he is not just a literal beekeeper but also an ex-covert operative known as a beekeeper. Someone who protects the hive at all costs. So he goes on a rampage of justice to find the kingpin of the internet scam.
His target is Derek Danforth (Josh Hutcherson). A flippant young man with friends in high places. Including ex-CIA director Wallace Westwyld (Jeremy Irons) whose job it is to keep him out of trouble. Danforth runs many scam operations where the employees appear to be using The Wolf Of Wall Street as an instructional video on how to conduct business. Which means that Clay can work his way through them to find his way to the top.
The Beekeeper is the kind of brainless action movie that lands on exactly the right side of stupid fun. The FBI agents following Clay’s path of destruction put a bit of humour into the exposition. Jeremy Irons is hilarious as a man visibly unhappy with his babysitting job. Minnie Driver makes a small cameo that has little function. A character asks Jason Statham if his accent has a little British Isles in it, seemingly to rule out everyone complaining about his American accent. There is an hilarious musical cue when we discover who a key character is (it will not be a surprise to you). Taylor James attempts to outdo Sharlto Copley as the most South African someone can be in a film. And there is an insanely hilarious amount of bee information. But the action is inventive, funny and occasionally brutal. And Jason Statham does exactly what he always does.
If you enjoy a Jason Statham action flick this is an enjoyable 105 minutes.
