Wish

The Kingdom of Rosas is ruled by the benevolent sorcerer King Magnifico (Chris Pine). He is able to grant the wishes of his subjects but in order to do so they must give up their memories of their wish. When seventeen-year-old Asha (Ariana DeBose) interviews for the role of Magnifico’s apprentice she discovers that Magnifico only chooses to grant wishes that he approves of and consigns others to languish in his tower forever, their recipients never able to remember what they once wished for.

Magnifico of course is not as benevolent as once thought. By choosing only those wishes he knows will help him keep his power over the Kingdom of Rosas he ensures his rule. Whilst those who no longer remember their wishes are more compliant now that the fires within them are slightly extinguished. Asha, unable to make others believe her, wishes upon a star only to find it descending from the skies to help her and give her pet goat Valentino (Alan Tudyk) a voice.

Disney’s Wish is possibly most famous for being the studios key release for its 100th anniversary. Throughout the film there are jokes and references to a multitude of previous Disney features across those years, whilst the story features a classic Disney tale. That of a singing “Princess” with a talking animal as a friend.

The biggest issue with the film as a whole though is that it is far too generic. Perhaps the result of trying to play safe for this anniversary feature. Whilst it is unlikely to live long in the memory or find itself picked in front of some of the many other Disney features as a family watch it is still entertaining enough for its brisk 95 minutes run time.

Chris Pine gets to have the most fun as the villain of the piece and both he and Ariana DeBose have great singing voices. Whilst the cute and feisty star and Alan Tudyk’s talking goat are great comic relief.
