Martha (Anna Kendrick) has just had a bad break up and whilst trying to numb the pain she bumps into Francis (Sam Rockwell) at a local convenience store who just seems perfect. They hit it off and have a whirlwind romance. But of course nobody’s perfect and Francis is an assassin on the run from the operatives who trained him including Hopper (Tim Roth).
Mr. Right was a Netflix film picked on a whim based on the two leads. Released in 2015 it completely passed me by and I certainly do not recall any fanfare or marketing for it. After watching the 95 minute action/comedy/quirky feature I can understand why. The only interesting and redeeming features are its charismatic leads and core idea. Otherwise it falls flat.
Kendrick and Rockwell have chemistry and their oddball quirkiness is fun. Rockwell dances (of course) and delivers his characters deadpan honesty with aplomb. Whilst Kendrick sells the fact that her character would quickly get on board with her boyfriend being an assassin.
Everything else is sub par. There is an incredibly half baked scene about how Francis and Martha have “flow” which is some kind of super power that allows them to predict opponents and objects movement. This feels like it was given up on though and was probably more important in the initial drafts of the script. Tim Roth’s villain is also underwritten with an idea that there is a history between him and Francis but never enough to make us care. Roth seems to try and cover this with a funny accent! The action sequences are passable in a low budget movie that wants to be more interested in the quirky comedy.
The ultimate feeling by the midway point is that everything worth watching has already happened but hey it’s only a 95 minute movie so let’s see how it pans out. Straight to video, dvd rental fodder that now unfortunately just finds its way to a streaming service for you to discover when bored.
Kendrick and Rockwell are fun though.
