The Union

Salt of the Earth Jersey boy Mike McKenna (Mark Wahlberg) works on a building site and spends his evenings in the same bar every night with his friends who he met at school. Which is exactly why Roxanne Hall (Halle Berry), his high school first love turned super spy chooses him to join “The Union”. A secret agency for spies who do the hard work and are blue collar.

“The Union” are trying to stop a list of all the spies in the world being sold on the black market and are in need of fresh agents to join their cause following a disastrous mission where all but one agent was killed, suggesting a mole on the inside. For those paying attention this is a virtually identical plot to Brian De Palma’s 1996 Mission Impossible.

In terms of quality and enjoyment levels there is little more to say than this is a direct to streaming Netflix action movie. Wahlberg and Berry provide star wattage alongside a supporting role for J. K. Simmons, the cinematography is bland but suitably bright and clear, the plot is rote and the action sequences by the numbers. At 107 minutes it is entirely too long but ultimately if you lower your expectations its mediocrity may while away some time if that’s what you are looking for.

Pedestrian and severely lacking in imagination. But what did you expect from a direct to Netflix action movie?
