A mocumentary telling the story of the 1982 Tour de France in which all but five cyclists were disqualified for doping.
This crazy TV movie runs for only 41 minutes but somehow manages to cram in an insane amount of jokes in an even more insane story. There is nothing real about the story or racers other than its piercing aim at drug use in cycling. The fact that they managed to get Lance Armstrong to appear is even more ridiculous.
Our five cyclists are; Juju Pepe (Orlando Bloom) who has so many drugs in his system he dies on a downhill segment of the race without anyone noticing, Marty Hass (Andy Samberg) who claims to be the only African cyclist but is just an American kid whose parents own a diamond mine in Nigeria, Adrian Baton (Freddie Highmore) who is secretly a woman dressed as a man, Slim Robinson (Daveed Diggs) who is Jackie Robinson’s nephew and obsessed with being the first black anything and Gustav Ditters (John Cena) who used to be skinny and is now ripped thanks to the steroids he is taking.
The cast list is incredible with the likes of James Marsden, Maya Rudolph, Danny Glover, Julia Ormond, Jeff Goldblum, Dolph Lundgren, Will Forte, Kevin Bacon, Edgar Wright, J. J. Abrams and even Mike Tyson turning up. All showing off the comedy ability we knew was within them.
Written by Murray Miller and directed by Jake Szymanski the tone is befitting of a sketch show and is incredibly funny. Although of course if this is not your idea of comedy it might well be excruciatingly painful to watch.
If you enjoy Andy Samberg’s work as part of The Lonely Island or Brooklyn Nine-Nine this is for you. I had a ball.
