Two rival fixers (George Clooney & Brad Pitt) are sent to the same New York Penthouse Hotel room to resolve a prominent New York officials error in judgement. As they both consider themselves a lone wolf, working together might be a problem.
Wolfs is writer/director Jon Watts first film since his incredibly successful Spider-Man trilogy and it’s a much lower key affair that aims for buddy comedy off the back of the two stars existing rapport. The result is a rather mediocre affair that frankly would not exist if it did not have the star clout the creative team lend it.
The film opens with New York District Attorney Margaret (Amy Ryan) phoning for assistance when the man she has taken to her room crashes into the drinks bar. Her man (George Clooney) arrives shortly after and begins to do his job. But then another man arrives (Brad Pitt) sent by Pam (Frances McDormand) who runs the hotel. After some squabbling the two are left to work out their issues between them and share the job.
At this point the film just seems to meander along drifting by on Clooney and Pitt’s star power. Neither Ryan or McDormand’s characters are seen or heard from again which seems like a gross waste of fantastic talent. And ultimately I just got bored.
I would love to say there was a particularly outstanding comedy moment or action sequence but there is not. It just plods amiably along making you wonder why everyone involved thought this might be a worthwhile artistic endeavour or if it was just an exercise in having Clooney and Pitt share the screen again.
If you love the actors involved this is just about passable.
