Back In Action

Emily (Cameron Diaz) and Matt (Jamie Foxx) are CIA operatives who faked their own deaths fifteen years ago so that they could raise a family together in safety. But when a social media video goes viral they find themselves back in action.

Their handler Chuck (Kyle Chandler) tries to warn them of the danger they are in before they are promptly attacked by mercenaries. They then head out on the run with their teenage children Alice (McKenna Roberts) and Leo (Rylan Jackson). Hijinks ensue and they escape to England where they are pursued by MI6 agent Baron (Andrew Scott) and seek help from Emily’s mother (Glenn Close) and boyfriend (Jamie Demetriou).

The first thing that I have to get off my chest with this review is point out that the title has a double meaning for the film’s two stars. Cameron Diaz last film before this feature was 2014’s Annie which also co-starred Fox. Diaz retired from acting to focus on her family and “reclaim my own life”. Jamie Foxx on the other hand suffered a stroke caused by a brain bleed whilst filming this movie resulting in the shoot being placed on hiatus for months whilst he recovered. Thankfully he recovered from his health scare and returned to complete the movie. So it is good to see them both back in action.

The issue with this film though is that it lands squarely in the “straight to streaming Netflix action comedy” genre that just screams mediocrity. The plot is by the numbers, the action is functional and the running time of 114 minutes is entirely too long.

Where it gets by is on the charisma of its stars and its jokes about parenting. Diaz, Foxx, Close and Scott are all far too good for this material and they certainly make the film watchable.

Passable as family watching where parents and children can laugh at the interactions on screen. But entirely forgettable at the same time.
