Fight or Flight

Disgraced former Secret Service Agent Lucas Reyes (Josh Hartnett) is given a shot at redemption when a Government Agency finds themselves desperately in need of a highly skilled agent in a location where they are suddenly bereft of them. If Lucas can board a flight from Bangkok to San Francisco, locate a criminal known only as ‘The Ghost’ who is thought to be on the flight and take them into custody he will be able to return to the U.S. and get his life back. There is only one problem though, the plane is full of assassins who are also after ‘The Ghost’.

Fight or Flight is unabashedly a B-movie and a superb one at that. Its plot is essentially Snakes on a Plane meets Bullet Train to make “Assassin’s on a Plane”. It features crazy fight sequences that are as funny as they are brutal and plenty of cheesy dialogue delivered with gusto. It also shows that Josh Hartnett’s mini career revival over the last couple of years has been a good thing.

Hartnett’s Lucas is essentially a highly functioning alcoholic killing machine that within the tight confines of a plane is able to use almost anything as a makeshift weapon to wreak destruction on his enemies. All whilst trying to protect his charge. Hartnett’s performance is never anything less than full throttle and you will find yourself chuckling away at his ingenuity and ability to care very little about being anything less than straightforward. For some more comic relief he forms a great comic act with a couple of air stewards who discover his task. Isha played by Charithra Chandran fares particularly well in this role.

The film is less assured on the ground where secret agents Katherine Brunt (Katee Sackhoff) and Aaron Hunter (Julian Kostov) engage in covert shenanigans to further their careers and goals whilst relying on Lucas up in the sky. Whilst I appreciate Katee Sackhoff is a cult legend following her role in Battlestar Galactica I am going to commit a cardinal sin and say that she is the least convincing character in the whole piece.

But it is up in the air where the film truly flies (yes I made an hilarious pun) and you are never too far away from another funny moment or brutal fight scene or both combined.

Great fun.
