When David (Colin Farrell) and Sarah (Margot Robbie) meet at a wedding they find themselves thrust on a Big Bold Beautiful Journey together by the magical GPS provided by their rental cars.
A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is a magical realist adventure that is equal parts introspective therapy session and hopelessly romantic love story. Both David and Sarah have their defences up when it comes to letting romance into their lives and each step on their journey takes them to a magical door that lets them step into moments in their lives that force them to learn about themselves as much as they learn about each other.
This is a deeply earnest film that I suspect will only be enjoyed by those of us who buy into the idea that soul mates exist and that if you are open minded enough to open yourself up to the risk of sharing your deepest self with someone else then contentment and happiness will follow. It is the sort of big sweeping idea that some will find as magical as the doors and GPS in this story and others will find as just eye rolling schmaltz.
For what it is worth director Kogonada provides an array of emotional moments across the spectrum of experiences and some glorious images and musical needle drop moments. All of which is enhanced by two leads that look like almost anyone’s idea of a soulmate and provide believably lost individuals. A lot of the heavy lifting in the film is done via the imagery and the leads with occasional clunky and artistic moments smoothed over by their appearance and performances.
It perhaps does not reach the highs of his previous feature After Yang but it is certainly interesting enough to spend your time with.
