Zootropolis 2

Odd couple cops Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) are back! Ready to solve another conspiracy in the city of Zootropolis that will shock its citizens to the core.

Interestingly, for me, as I watched this in Australia, I was treated to seeing it under its original title, Zootopia, which gets to the root of what the story is about. A utopian city where all animals can live together, except for snakes and lizards, who are not welcome thanks to events that took place nearly one hundred years ago. But Judy and Nick’s latest case may just uncover the fact that the citizens of Zootropolis/Zootopia have been sold a lie.

There are some returning cameos from favourites from the original film, Flash the Sloth chief amongst them, and numerous new characters with funny moments within the main plot line that sees Judy and Nick uncover the reason snakes and lizards have been ousted from society.

I remember being rather taken with the original film that was released in 2016, but I think it is fair to say that this sequel is rather by the numbers. It looks fabulous with the usual high standards of animation that we would expect from a Disney flagship title, and the voice cast is superb. The cast includes the likes of Patrick Warburton, Dwayne Johnson, Idris Elba, Alan Tudyk, Ke Huy Quan, Andy Samberg, Stephanie Beatriz, Michael J. Fox, Danny Trejo, and many more. But the storyline is ultimately a rehash of the odd couple friendship from the original and another twisty-turning conspiracy.

A perfectly fine animated sequel that will entertain its core audience. But there is nothing particularly inspiring for anyone outside that core group.
