Rampage

rampage-posterWhen a gorilla, a wolf and an alligator/crocodile get infected with a pathogen they increase in size, strength and rage and head to Chicago to climb some buildings. Of course this game turned film has an absolutely bonkers storyline but thanks to Dwayne Johnson’s charisma and some odd moments it’s actually quite good fun.

Starting with a write up telling us about outlawed genetic editing before throwing us into a crumbling space station where illegal experiments have gone wrong you know that the plot can not be taken seriously at any point! That taken on board it’s got a lot going for it.
Initial set pieces on said space station and a forest have a near horror feel as monsters lay waste to those around them. Villain brother/sister owners of the company who created the pathogen are ridiculously over the top. Malin Ackerman’s Claire Wyden somehow thinks they can make money from this whilst her snivelling brother played by Jake Lacy is always eating! Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays a government agent with his usual arrogant southern drawl and gets the best moment in the film with his reaction to waking up from being knocked out. Dwayne Johnson brings his usual beaming charm and action hero status. If anything it’s only his partner throughout this venture who is short changed, Naomie Harris has little to do other than be constantly rescued and fill in plot points.
In terms of the game elements, the names of the gorilla and wolf are correct and they do smash buildings whilst the army try to stop them, so it’s pretty accurate on that front.
So all in all, it’s probably everything the likes of Pacific Rim should be. Breezy, funny, full of giant monsters destroying things fun.

  1. Again agree it is good fun and Dwayne Johnson has another winner. Jeffrey Dean Morgan (who was good) just replayed his Walking Dead Negan character, so odd to see him as one of the good guys
