Based on a true story, this is the tale of Richard Sharp (Ben Claflin) and Tami Oldham (Shailene Woodley) being left adrift after their yacht is stricken following a tropical storm.
Starting with the aftermath of the storm and cutting back and forth between how Richard and Tami met and fell in love is about the only interesting story characteristic that Adrift has to keep it going. At only 96 minutes it still feels painfully long given the basic concept. Tami is a wandering soul who left home 5 years earlier and travels where the wind blows her and when she meets Richard in Tahiti they fall in love and are given the opportunity to earn money to fund their further travels by sailing a rich acquaintances yacht to San Diego. After the storm Tami does some brief repairs, rescues a badly injured Richard and veers between determination and delirium.
Unfortunately that is all there is to the film. Claflin is wasted spouting cheesy lines before the storm and unable to move after whilst Woodley (who also produced) does some emotional heavy lifting that left me unmoved. Even a (very telegraphed) spin on a happy ending couldn’t save this from being mediocre. I would suggest you seek out “All is Lost” instead if you wanted to see a stricken vessel at sea movie.

I did like this one, however, I would say it could do with a further edit. Just added All Is Lost to my view list – thanks for the recommendation

The fact that it needs more sliced off at its already short running time isn’t great though is it. I feel that a true story really should be more compelling.
