Charlie’s Angels (2019)

8D047817-0A30-4F3B-9BB7-CF5D9D8F86E5 The Townsend organisation has gone international and Bosley (Patrick Stewart) is retiring. Under the tutelage of new Bosley (Elizabeth Banks who also writes and directs) can existing angels Sabina (Kristen Stewart) and Jane (Ella Balinska) successfully bring Elena (Naomi Scott) into the fold whilst solving the theft of a new powerful weapon?

When is a reboot not a reboot? Well, surprisingly Charlie’s Angels 2019 edition positions itself as a sequel to the Cameron Diaz led films with a sequence that explains Patrick Stewart’s Bosley is actually Bill Murray and Bernie Mac’s Bosley from the 2000 and 2003 films. It does this with some truly awful photoshopped pictures and Stewart blurting out a cheesy line of dialogue that he was definitely there. Ultimately I felt this segment summed up the film. It’s incredibly rough around the edges but it’s having a lot of fun.

There are some other nods to those earlier iterations of Charlie’s Angels including a mute villain (Jonathan Tucker) and a glimpse of some outfits in a wardrobe, but in the main this film feels completely different. Whilst the women’s sexuality is present this is about the empowerment of women and Kristen Stewart very early on states that women can do anything. Throughout the film we see them use their brains as much as their bodies and toxic male behaviour is pointed out.

It is also very different because of the team dynamic. This is a new team and friendships need to be forged. The actresses have good rapport with each other and whilst there is no real team leader it is Stewart who seems to be having the most fun with her socially awkward no filter heiress.

But back to my statement about being rough around the edges. You will need to go into this film with an open mind and some good will. There are some incredibly clunky moments. A car chase in Germany is awfully edited and difficult to not spot continuity errors in. Whilst some of the combat and lines in the film really do fall flat.

But everyone is having a lot of fun. Even Sam Claflin as the CEO of the company that had its product stolen seems to realise that over the top is the way to go.

Personally I’d like to see these Angels get another shot even if this effort doesn’t always work.
