Bombshell

13F93FEC-DB2E-41FF-BF60-6222EF28408C The true story of the sexual assault scandal at Fox News involving its all powerful overseer Roger Ailes (John Lithgow) told through the eyes of some of the key women involved, including established anchors Megyn Kelly (Charlize Theron), Gretchen Carlson (Nicole Kidman) and ambitious newcomer Kayla Pospisil (Margot Robbie).

Bombshell has an important story to tell about the #MeToo movement and whilst it doesn’t always succeed it is a fascinating watch that has moments that suggest that without continued breakthroughs that the future may still be depressing in regards to abuses of power.

Its main draw is that it has four incredibly memorable performances. Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman play driven professionals troubled by the inequality around them. But it is Margot Robbie and John Lithgow who will live in your memories. Robbie is the devastatingly naive young conservative who wants to anchor a show whilst Lithgow is a man so entitled by his success that he has no perception that anything he does could be wrong.

There are a large number of supporting roles as well including many recognisable actors and impersonations of some of Fox News more well known characters such as Geraldo Rivera. Some of these feel less rounded out as a result of their much smaller screen time and can feel a little tacked on in the case of the Fox News stars.

As a dramatic film it sometimes feels as though it drifts with too many characters not getting enough time, something that it’s hard to wonder if a documentary might be able to flesh out better. But it is a fascinating subject made more appealing by some super performances.
