A grieving Dr. Dolittle (Robert Downey Jr.) has locked himself away from the world until that is Queen Victoria (Jessie Buckley) is taken ill and requests his help. Setting him on a perilous journey to find a mysterious plant to save her.
Dolittle by any account is a bad film. It very obviously appears cobbled together and has little to no focus and plot lines that go missing or feel unsatisfyingly resolved. On top of that Downey Jr. has decided his performance requires a Welsh accent, which would be fine if it wasn’t utterly awful. The fact that it looks as though it has been dubbed in post production makes me wonder how bad it was during filming. The fact that the film culminates with a fart joke seems apt.
In an effort for balance and to look on the positives, it features a lovely animated prologue that has a more satisfying story than the actual film, the kids will love it and you can try to guess all the famous people voicing the animals to try and keep you awake.
Stay for a mid credits sequence if you haven’t fallen asleep.
