During a family holiday Billie (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and Pete (Will Ferrell) are faced with the sight of an avalanche coming toward them and their children. Pete’s act of self preservation over the safety of his family results in them both reevaluating their relationship.
Downhill is an American remake of Ruben Östlund’s 2014 film Force Majeure, a film that unfortunately I’ve not had the pleasure of watching but one that I will definitely track down on the basis of this one. Whilst Downhill features two well known comedic actors it is far more of a drama than a comedy with a keen eye for the nature of trust in a long standing relationship. When it is funny it’s because the actors are able to find the humour in difficult circumstances.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus is the star of the show throughout and whilst it feels like it only scratches the surface of its subject matter it’s still an entertaining watch.

Glad you enjoyed, this one wasn’t for me at all.
You are right though Louis-Dreyfus was pretty much the star of the show.

Yeah I read your review and saw you weren’t a fan. I am wondering if a watch of the original will make it seem less good though.

Using the “incident” to explore the flaws within this family makes for a fascinating dissection. The castng of two comic actors is important here to give a lightness of tone to an otherwise dark situation. While the movie doesn’t really come to a conclusion, it is thoughtful, well directed, well acted with some amazing photography
