Talk To Me

On the second anniversary of the death of her mother, Mia (Sophie Wilde) seeks the companionship of her best friend Jade (Alexandra Jensen) and Jade’s younger brother Riley (Joe Bird). Heading to a party they get more than they bargained for when Mia agrees to take part in a mysterious game.

The game involves holding on to an embalmed hand and saying “Talk To Me”. But those watching need to make sure that their friend does not hold on for more than ninety seconds unless things go beyond what their mind can take.

Talk To Me is a really exceptional horror movie. The plot feels very much like a modern spin on Flatliners (1990), which of course had a mostly forgettable remake in 2017. Teenagers messing with the other side discovering that the spirits that reside there are not an inert force.

What sets this film apart though is its commitment to giving its main protagonist a backstory that lends the entire plot an emotional weight. Mia is still racked by the grief of her mother’s death. Whilst her relationship with Jade and Riley is one of extended family as a result of the support they gave her during her mourning. So when events start to spiral out of control you really feel the suffering between all of them.

The structure, lighting and effects work create a creepy, tense and just plain scary 95 minutes and the ending is a classic horror film ending that should leave you with a big smile.

Thoroughly recommended for anyone who loves the genre.
