Early Man

mammothearly-manDug (Eddie Redmayne) is a member of a Stone Age tribe ousted from their valley by the new Bronze Age people led by Lord Nooth (Tom Hiddleston). Luckily Dug can challenge Nooth to a game of football for his land back.

Aardman animation are legends in their field but to say this is a tad disappointing is an understatement. It will still keep the kids amused for its 89 minute run time but there is little more than a few chuckles for the adults watching with them.

The opening 15 minutes are probably the highlight when the jokes still focus around the time period setting but after this they focus firmly on the beautiful game that is football and there is nothing new in anything being said from there on in. In fact I would argue this would be much more satisfying as a 30 minute Sunday afternoon offering than a feature film.

  1. Totally agree. Nick Park is the master of the short feature yet seems unable to retain interest when expanding to a feature length movie. There are always plenty of jokes to keep you entertained, but the characters lack depth, unlike Pixar at its best
