Mission: Impossible Fallout

mission-impossibleEthan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team must track down stolen plutonium before it is used in a scheme involving old adversary Solomon Lane (Sean Harris).

Fallout is the 6th film in the Mission Impossible franchise and it is the first to ever bring back a previous director, the first to genuinely continue a story from a previous film and easily the best blockbuster of the summer and an action film that could stand alongside the best in the genre. Christopher McQuarrie, who reinvigorated the franchise with Rogue Nation picks up the reigns again here and dials everything up to frenetic levels.

The team is mostly back together. Luther (Ving Rhames), Benji (Simon Pegg) and Hunt are in the field, with Hunley (Alec Baldwin) watching their backs and Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) on a separate mission that overlaps the IMF’s. Jeremy Renner’s Brandt is the only main character to not return, his absence is unexplained, but this would not be the first time for characters to drop in and out of the series. New additions come in the form of Henry Cavill’s Walker and Angela Bassett’s Sloan. Both CIA operatives who are there to oversee the IMF’s operation. Cavill is the stand out new addition, described as a hammer to Hunt’s scalpel and the stark difference in size and tactics is refreshing.

Of course an impossible mission’s most important feature are its stunts and Fallout does not disappoint. It’s arguably the most exciting of the series and you have to wonder where the series can go from here. It features a Halo jump, a car and motorcycle chase through Paris, a brutal fist fight in a toilet block, a foot race through London where you can see Cruise break his ankle and most impressively of all, a helicopter chase through mountains. Cruise of course pushing the limits and his Insurance company I’m sure, by doing as many of his own stunts as possible. The fact that this series commits to as little CGI as possible makes it such a visceral experience, it’s a glory to behold.

All previous films in the series have been entirely stand alone stories with recurring characters. This time, whilst you will not get lost in the story, it would be worthwhile entering the film with knowledge of events in films 3 and 5 in the franchise. This works as a direct sequel to Rogue Nation and features key plot points from the third film. The result is that it makes Hunt more human than ever and gives us greater insight into what drives the man who never turns down a mission.

A must see action movie.

  1. Totally agree – an absolute must see. A tremendous action film that has thrilling sequences yet never loses sight of its character development. Very, very impressive.
