An elite CIA team headed up by James Silva (Mark Wahlberg) has to travel 22 Miles to get an intelligence asset out of the country. Obstacles will be encountered and a touch of the old ultraviolence will ensue.
Director Peter Berg’s fourth consecutive film with Mark Wahlberg (if you ignore tv and documentaries) is probably in the bottom two in terms of quality. Where Patriots Day and Deepwater Horizon were able to ground themselves in real peoples stories, Mile 22 returns to the jingoism of Lone Survivor. Berg seems to revel in displaying American military might, even if this attempts to show the murky politics of his other film about an elite American team of agents in a foreign land The Kingdom.
Given the plot is under baked (check out The Kingdom to see Berg do this better) does the characterisation and action make up for it? Not really. Wahlberg is incredibly irritating as a character we are told multiple times is a genius but never shows it and just about everyone else is filler. The asset being taken out of the country is Li Noor (Iko Uwais) and thankfully this is the seminal martial artist of The Raid movies. Unfortunately whilst his fight scenes are the highlight of the film Berg resorts to fast cut and choppily edited scenes that ruin the enjoyment. The gunfights are very well put together though.
All in all it’s a bit of a mess with some half decent action moments. It is thankfully mercilessly short at 94 minutes long.

Totally agree. I enjoyed the other Peter Berg / Mark Wahlberg films, but this is just a mess. A straight forward plot is turned inside out by nonsense structure and editing. There is a half decent story in there, however it is ruined by all of the above and characters I wouldn’t trust to put away supermarket shopping trollies.
