Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) is a single mother and vLogger with heaps of wholesome energy. When she meets Emily (Blake Lively) she is enraptured by her cosmopolitan lifestyle and free spirit. A friendship is struck and then Emily disappears.
Director Paul Feig is better known for female led comedies such as Bridesmaids, Spy and Ghostbusters but for his latest film he veers into thriller territory. His calling cards of strong female led films and humour are still very much present though. The plot constantly twists and turns and thankfully the trailer gives little away for those who have seen it.
The films biggest strengths are probably the performances from Lively and Kendrick and the huge amounts of style on display. Their worlds are presented in pristine contrast to each other. Working mother in a power position wearing designer outfits compared to stay at home mom with outlet clothing and lifestyle advice. Lively is fantastic as the woman who takes no prisoners and never says sorry and Kendrick is at her quirky best as she attaches to something she sees as chic.
It’s entertaining and keeps you guessing, but I think I craved a little more darkness. It’s certainly there around the edges, but it’s humour slices through any that lingers.

Here goes without giving the game away!! I really liked it, thought an interesting balance of drama and comedy. Kendrick who I have never really warmed to (ask Joey), was at her best her, and the character improved as the film went along. In all honesty, there are so many twists, the film almost falls over itself. That said it is great fun for most of its length.

I have to agree with those comments, apart from not warming to Anna Kendrick. I’m a big fan of her in Up in the Air and the first two Pitch Perfects. Although I do think her output is watered down by the sheer volume of indie films she does which have varying quality.
