The Kitchen

2A5C6450-7734-470C-8FD6-4C7A0D611F99Hells Kitchen, 1978. The husbands of Kathy (Melissa McCarthy), Ruby (Tiffany Haddish) and Claire (Elizabeth Moss) are sent to prison for armed robbery and when the Irish mob don’t provide for them they decide to continue on in their husbands roles and earn for themselves.

The Kitchen has an initially interesting concept that fails to payoff in any interesting way. The idea that the women would take over the roles of their husbands and ascend to power is interesting. Given the era there are all sorts of obstacles that they would need to overcome. Each woman is given a specific obstacle as well. Kathy is a mother which conflicts with the brutality of rising to the top in this career. Ruby is black in a part of the city dominated by Irish and Italians. Claire has been the subject of domestic abuse for years and wants to break those shackles.

The problem is that none of those challenges are tackled on any more than a surface level and worst of all is that their is no real sense of camaraderie or conflict between the women that would drive a satisfactory conclusion.

Otherwise the film is generally fine with the costumes and set dressing capturing the era well and Domhnall Gleeson popping up in a pivotal supporting role.
