Companion

Josh (Jack Quaid) takes his new girlfriend Iris (Sophie Thatcher) for a weekend away with his best friends. Iris is nervous that Josh’s friends will not like her, but no one would have guessed quite how badly the getaway will turn out.

When Iris met Josh it was love at first sight. A meet-cute in the fruit aisle of a supermarket that could have been written in a romance novel which blossomed into a perfect romance. But it seems clear that Josh’s best friend Kat (Megan Suri) does not like her and Kat’s millionaire boyfriend Sergey (Rupert Friend) fancies her. It’s only the other couple at the getaway, Patrick (Lukas Gage) and Eli (Harvey Guillen) who seem to share her idea of true love.

As tensions escalate into murder Josh shows his true colours when it comes to his relationship with Iris and things spiral out of control in this incredibly enjoyable comedy horror thriller.

Companion is a film you should try to go into with as little knowledge as possible. Its twists and turns are definitely part of the fun and I suspect on multiple watches will add some extra layers to the dialogue and events. It’s set in a slightly futuristic world with some fun technology such as self driving cars that are voice activated that add to the fun and make it feel very much inspired by Black Mirror.

At its surface level it’s an incredibly enjoyable black comedy. Its horror elements are isolated to some short, sharp violent moments. Under the surface it’s about coercive control, gaslighting and toxic masculinity. Ultimately it’s about men who think they are owed more than they get.

Jack Quaid is perfect casting as the nice guy who has some serious entitlement issues. But this is Sophie Thatcher’s film and a redemption story for her character Iris. Running through a gamut of emotions and proving herself a real scream queen after last year’s Heretic

I highly recommend this one.

    1. In terms of trailers this film definitely did a better job. Unfortunately I had aspects of it spoiled for me because it took me a couple of weeks to get to see it. But I still thought it was very good. Would have loved to have come to it without that knowledge.
